Byfield State Forest marks the start of the largest undeveloped area on the central Queensland coast. The endemic Byfield fern and Byfield grevillea thrive here. Ancient cycads survive among rugged mountains and beside pine plantations. Water Park Creek is great for birdwatching. Spy azure kingfishers flitting over the water's surface or listen for the distinctive call of the wompoo fruit-dove. Camping is permitted at Upper Stony, Red Rock and Water Park Creek campgrounds. Dogs on leashes are allowed only at Red Rock campground and must be on a leash at all times. Estuarine crocodiles have been seen in Water Park Creek and at Red Rock so only swim at Upper Stony.
