Modern art has long been an area of focus in Brisbane. The Institute of Modern Art was founded in 1975 and continues to deliver programs dedicated to emerging and established artists. Matthew Barney, named 'the most important artist of his generation' by the New York Times, is among the calibre of artists featured.
IMA runs a program of exhibitions and events featuring emerging and established local, national, and international artists. The program takes in aspects of the moving image, sound art, and new music.
The Institute is housed in the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art, in Fortitude Valley.
